Television News The mass media in all it forms and formats has changed the civilization immensely, and today billions of people in developed and developing countries can benefit from this access to various information gathered from around the globe. Television news is one of the most widely used medium for transmitting information to the public audience, which is why there is a certain debate about whether TV news are worth trusting. Ideally, TV news programs must be independent and uncensored, and they should provide information as it is, revealing sources and bolstering all facts. In reality, however, there unfortunately is a phenomenon called state-run media (Free Press, 2006), which refers to a special type of news programs that are financed and/or manipulated by government, or some other major entity. Thus, news programs not always give fair and in-depth coverage of important issues, which means they cannot be trusted completely. Barring the newspapers, radio, and internet, TV news programs are very important for many businesspeople in today’s highly competitive and intensely globalized world. Not only television news programs provide us with general information about the various events in the world, but they aid businesspeople in making strategic business and financial decisions, since many events might influence financial indicators in the stock markets. Therefore, millions (if not billions) of people all over the world watch TV news shows – different people for different reasons - to get to know about events in the world. It is important to note that some groups of people might make very important decisions – business or whatsoever – in accordance with what they saw in the news. Thus, TV news is not only an important tool for spreading information, but it is also very effective in influencing people. In addition to financial decisions, TV news can also foster certain attitudes to various phenomena, people, events, or objects. This feature of TV news programs attracts different business and government entities, and if the moral and ethical background of the news firm is poor, consumers – TV watchers – might end up receiving falsified information, fraudulent data, or irrelevant and unfair news. Unfortunately, there are proven occurrences of manipulation of media by the government even in the United States, as Free Press has reported. This national organization states that “broadcasters routinely air government-funded video news releases without disclosing their source; the White House has set aside billions in taxpayer dollars to hire public relations firms and infiltrate our news system with fake news” (Free Press, 2006). Thus, Americans should pay attention to the news programs they so trustfully watch, because more than half of Americans can be reached through the 77 stations that air fake news (Free Press, 2006). Most dangerous territories are East and South. Those in the North-West and North, on the other hand, can enjoy the real, unbiased new releases. Ultimately, TV news programs are very important for today’s rapidly changing world, especially for businesspeople engaged in finance. Globalization and migration make international and local news a much demanded product. However, due to its influential features, major entities might manipulate programs to pursue some financial and/or political interests. Thus, TV news shows cannot be trusted fully. Bibliography 1.
