Chonita The essay written by Americo Peredes is an interesting piece of writing that tells about adventures of kids that lived in a poor neighborhood near to Fort Jones. The narrator of the story remains unknown, and he does not mention many names at all. However, the narrator did mention name of one girl. This girl, Chonita, was the object of everyone’s grinning and laughing. And although the essay is devoted to her, she did not do much in the plot, and even died in the end. However, with so little things that she had done, Chonita surprises readers with her behavior and adventures. Generally, Chonita is a wonderful example of a round character of the story. A round character of any story is the one that is not two-dimensional, is not flat. In other words, a round character of an essay can surprise the reader by his or her actions. A round character can differ from the rest, and be unique. And what is very important, a round character is not boring, but rather is interesting and intriguing. Chonita may not have all these qualities, but she definitely has some of them. For example, Chonita was unlike the rest of the kids in the neighborhood because she was brave enough to go and see what soldiers had been doing inside Fort Jones, “none of us ever went into fort Jones. None except Chonita.” This property makes her a unique character of the story. The second reason I think Chonita is a round character is because she was not afraid of the crowd. He was brave, and courageous. When everybody laughed at her, and smirked and grinned, she did not pay attention and enjoyed what she was doing. I think this is some kind of opposition to the crowd, and this makes her a strong character. A flat character would brake into tears and call mother, but Chonita was all right, and even accepted fake praise. This is another confirmation that she is a round character. The bad news about her death testifies that Chonita’s life was changing. She was not doing the same things, but she changed. Although the change was not a pleasant one, it still is a change. And round characters must change to surprise readers. Chonita is a little bear-footed girl, who is very strong inside, only the kids that were around her did not understand this. The only person who respected and liked Chonita was the narrator of the story. With her qualities, such as courage, uniqueness, and spiritual power, Chonita is of course a round character of essay The Hammon and the Beans. What makes her unique even more is that she is very poor, and hungry, and still possesses those noble characteristics of a developing character. Although many readers can think that Chonita is a flat character, I strongly disagree with this idea.
