Human Android Robots have already become a reality. They do not walk our dogs yet like in the movies, but they play with our kids, help us cook and perform monotonous or dangerous work. However, our robots are not androids yet, they do not have human emotions. Should we go on and design robots that would be conscious and emotional? Will these emotional robots be able to become parts of human society, and will they be dangerous for people? What the ethical consequences will be? My paper is not about artificial intellect robots that are already integrated into our life, but about androids, robots that look like humans and imitate human emotions (“The Philosophy and Future of Androids,” 2005). So far robots are still machines that act according to programming, they do not think – they count or follow an algorithms. Thus, they cannot go beyond of what was programmed into them. Androids however are planned to be emotional and thinking. Emotion is one of the things that make us alive and human. Other things that distinguish us both from non-living things and from animals are the morality and ethics. These two can be input into robots’ program. I agree that emotions can also be programmed. However, these thoughts, emotions and moral values will be predictable and will not go beyond the limits of program. Human thoughts and emotions are different. People can be unpredictable, they can hide emotions and demonstrate unexpected behavior. Human thought can be extraordinary, and people can make inventions. People have different characters, manners, cultures, etc. You cannot find two individuals who would be absolutely the same. This is obviously impossible to give androids that many human characteristics. Moreover, I am sure we should not do it even if we could. The reason is, if we design emotional and unpredictable creatures, Isaak Asimov’s scenario might come true (“Ethical and moral issues of artificial intelligence,” 2005). Designing androids, scientists think about two models: a robot that will react to impulses and will produce emotions similar to human, and androids that will actually have personalities and consciousness. Whereas the first is more or less possible, the other still keeps being only in a project. Even though right now there is no information available yet whether the second type of android is possible to create, little people would question the fact that it will become possible with further development of science. I am not a scientist who can identify how an android with perfect simulation of human character is possible. However, my knowledge in psychology lets me believe that as human nature will be further studied, we will be able to know how human consciousness and emotions work. We have already done the way from Descartes to Freud and his followers (Browne, 2005). We know that human psychology is complex. However, there are certain schemes, according to which human psychology develops. We know that a lot of influence is made of person during childhood. Relations with parents and environment form human personality. When a human being is only born, it is not able to produce those emotions and thoughts that are typical for adults. Babies function on a more primitive level. They want to eat – they cry, they are cold – they cry and so forth. This is not hard to program robots this way. Thus we can say that we already have androids on baby level of human psychology development. Later on baby develops according to its environment. We all know about children raised by animals, who act like animals. Thus we can conclude that children duplicate the behavior they observe. I suggest that there can be a program built that would work on the basis of duplicating human behavior. This suggested scheme of human android development coincides with the opinion of behaviorists, who focus on inputs and outputs of human behavior. However, I do not agree with the opinion that internal processes are less important. My point of view is that only having studied scheme of internal psychological process we will better understand how inputs are transformed into outputs. Thus, we might be able to create not true human androids. Will we benefit from it? Debates on the topic of ability or disability to artificially produce human mind and character are very popular. Many psychologists and philosophers think that no matter how advanced a computer is, it will still be unable of producing some features of human mind, such as creating double meaning for phrases they say, humor, etc. A popular example to this statement is the experiment described by Searle in Minds, Brains and Science. This experiment demonstrated how computer could not produce semantic content, which is easily done by humans (Searle, 1984 p.32). However, this was back in 1984 and who knows maybe with the development of computers this will become possible in the way that I have described. I have suggested that in some way scientists will be able of teaching androids emotions, however, my other question is whether we want androids to have emotions. If our task is to create someone similar to humans, then, yes, we definitely need emotions; however, should this be the task? We should think about numerous problems that we might create for ourselves. It might sound ridiculous right now, but what will prevent people from falling in love with androids when they will be absolutely similar to humans? They will be similar, but they will not be humans from physiological point of view. This will be an absolute non-sense if we finally decide to give androids the ability to have babies. Maybe I think that it is nonsense because we do not practice it yet and this is simply the stereotypes? No, I do not think so. I think we should not play Gods and create human-like creatures, because we are not Gods and it will have unfortunate consequences. We may end up living in the world were we will be a minority group and will have to fight from letting our children get married with androids. Sounds like nonsense, but who knows how far we will go in our attempts of creating emotional and thinking creatures? In order to understand if robots should be emotional let us analyze why people are emotional. First of all, our emotions are essential to our lives. Emotions are the part of our identity and personality. This is one of the ways how we get or do not get along with each other. There are positive and negative emotions. Everybody wants to have good emotions, fell happy and thus we strive towards making ourselves happy. In fact this idea about creating androids is one of the ways to make ourselves happier. People have always wanted to do nothing and have everything. Thus, we hope that androids will do our work for us. So why do we want androids to have emotions either? What else do emotions do except identifying ourselves and others, communicating among ourselves? One of the most important roles emotions play in our lives is the pushing power they have. As I said there are pleasant, positive and unpleasant, negative emotions. Of course, pleasant emotions are the ones we prefer and the ones we want to dominate. Positive emotions come when we are happy. Thus we do everything to be happy. Therefore we see that the desire for good emotions pushes us towards some actions. Negative emotions have pushing power as well. In fact, negative emotions are even more influential and at the same time are dangerous. The feeling of pain and offence can produce truly disastrous actions. Wars are caused by negative emotions. However, emotions also enable us to forgive, love and take care of somebody. The thing that somehow regulates our emotions, or instincts, according to Freud, is the superego, which is made of our consciousness and is influences by our morality. Emotions also breed imagination and intuition, which also influences our action (Greenspan, 1988 p. 4). If we want androids to think similarly to the way people think we must give that intuition, which is impossible without emotions. Thus, we see that emotions help people to take actions, make decisions, predict something that is impossible to predict through rational thinking, create something new, be artistic, communicate among each other and be happy, etc. All of this is essential for people. However is it necessary for androids? If we want them to play the same role in society as do, then - yes – we need to give them emotions. However, we do not want them being equal. We do not want to further compete with androids, do we? We just want them to make our lives more enjoyable. I think there are two main reasons why scientists are trying to find ways to create emotional and thinking androids. The first is scientific anxiety and ambitions, and the other is the wish to create companions for people, someone who can help us with our work and help us have more positive emotions. If we create emotional androids, yes, we might add some positive emotions to ourselves, because it will surely be more fun to cook together who can talk with you just like a friend in stead of a cooking machine. However, there are also numerous dangers that emotional androids will cause to human society. As I have discussed emotions push for actions. I have already mentioned that studying our internal psychological processes will enable us to understand how one emotions on the input produce other emotions on the output. If we manage it we will understand how it works, however, will we be able to make a different scheme? We do not want androids running around killing people after someone offended them, which happens among people due to their human emotions. Therefore, we must make corrections to android human psychology. We also need to spend enough time testing this new scheme to make sure that it does not have mistakes. Personally I doubt that we can produce psychology more perfect than the one created by God. Another risk of having emotional androids is in fooling ourselves. If a lonely person will buy an android to help him doing some work and be a companion, s/he might be pleased with such company and will cease looking for human companions. This will change roles in society, family values, will underestimate friendship and value of human communication. People will become even more lonesome, being content with communication with a machine. Science fiction provided us with a lot of examples of what consequences of creating emotional robots can be. For example, HAL 9000, artificial intellect in the book 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke killed the whole crew of the ship he controlled due to his paranoid fears. Another example is depicted in popular movie I, Robot after the book of Isaac Aasimov, where robots were at first controlled by Three Laws of Robotics, which did not let them harm humans under any circumstances. At first we see that everything went well and people were happy with their androids. Lonely senior people were not feeling lonesome, however, it all soon went wrong because the newest robots were not acting in accordance to these thee laws. This is another important risk: androids can be a too dangerous in hands of ill-willed people. Speaking about possible integration of androids into human society, I would say that they can be integrated only as our helpers. For that reason they need to be different, otherwise having human psychology they will rebel. People control their emotions with the help of morals, ethics, and codes of behavior in society. Yes, this all can be implemented into android program. Androids can be taught to feel as I wrote earlier, but we cannot allow them producing emotions similarly to the way humans do. There are too many crimes made by humans based on emotions. Then how can we create somebody who will do the same crimes? Emotions might also distract them from doing work. We design them for doing something, which they might at some point not feel like doing. What do we do then? I think that androids would be able to cause some feelings from the side of people. People can get attached to them even more than they get attached to their favorite cars now. Human love and emotions are real. Should we fool ourselves and create something that we will love like people, but who will be artificial? Will this help us being happier? Or will this cause danger? My opinion is that we should not play Gods and create robots that will be able of solving rational problems, doing physical work. We should not attempt to create artificial companions for ourselves, because from one side it will further separate us from each other. One of the basics of human happiness is love. We are happy when we can bring pleasure to people that we love. The wish to bring pleasure to an android is stupid. We should better take care of other people and animals, those that are alive. Integration of androids into human society cannot be on the basis of equal right, because than we would have to compete against them, and will possibly be defeated. Androids can be integrated into our lives only as assets for making our everyday life, and our work easier. In order to do this they should not be emotional. Emotional androids can be dangerous and uncontrollable. If we want somebody human why don’t we just give birth in the way God planned it? Why are we playing into creators, trying to invent something that was invented long time ago? Bibliography Browne, R. (2005). “Philosophy Questions.” PhiloSophos.com.
